Frequently asked questions
HAIR EXTENSIONS
Yes, absolutely. Consultations are compulsory for all first time clients and returning clients that would like to try a new method of application. A consultation will help to determine which method is most suitable for you, we can assess the health of your natural hair and scalp as well as carry out a colour and texture match. We encourage clients to book a Virtual Consultation first to gather initial information, determine which method may be best suited to you and to give a rough idea on pricing. This really helps you to decide on next steps and we find these virtual consualtations extremely efficient as a first step.
Yes, you can! As long as your hair is suitable for hair extensions and we have the required hair extensions in stock, you can have your hair extensions fitted following your consultation. A 50% deposit is required before we begin prepping your hair extensions and the balance is paid at the end of your appointment.
Hair extensions don't damage your hair. Unsuitable methods, improper application and incorrect aftercare do. We use the best quality hair extensions, tools and materials and our staff are experienced hair extension specialists. You will receive aftercare advice and we are always on hand to help. If it comes to light that a particular method isn't working well with your hair, we will re-assess your hair and reccommend a more suitable method.
We work with Nude London and Ariela Hair. Ariela Hair is produced using human remi hair and comes in a variety of colours for all extension techniques on the market whilst Nude London is for those in search of a much higher luxury product curated using unprocessed virgin Indian and Russian hair.
Ariela Hair offers double-drawn Remi hair extensions. In an industry first, they offer an unlimited colour palette with made-to-order colour matches that can be completely custom blended specially for you. Their hair ranges from 16"-30" so whether you need a small amount to fill out your bob or you want cascading voluminous curls, there is something for you. The Textured Tress line offers those with natural afro or relaxed hair alternative options to match their hair type.
Nude London is a luxury hair brand with three collections namely, Pure Indian, Russian Gold and Curls Collection. This beautiful Virgin Indian and Russian single donor hair comes in lengths from 16"-32". This hair truly is the pinnacle of hair extensions and is well worth the investment. It is raw and unprocessed, can be re-used over and over again for years and can be coloured in-salon for the absolute perfect colour match. With every wash and conditioning treatment, it gets better and better.
Depending on which method of application is used, rate of hair growth and the aftercare process, you would usually require maintenance at 6 weeks and a complete removal and re-application at the 8-10 week mark. The hair extensions we stock can be used multiple times so these will not be replaced until necessary or if you fancy a change.
We recommend the use of the Nude London hair care line in conjunction with your hair extensions. These products have been tried and tested extensively in our salon and along with all the positive client feedback we have received, they are our recommended product line of choice. All products mentioned below are from their product line and can be purchased here (www.arielahairandbeauty.com/haircare)from Ariela Hair & Beauty.
• Wash and condition hair twice a week in luke warm water with Rehydrate shampoo (https://www.arielahairandbeauty.com/product-page/nude-london-rehydrate-shampoo)and Replenish conditioner.(https://www.arielahairandbeauty.com/product-page/nude-london-replenish-conditioner) This duo from Nude London are sulfate and alcohol free. If there is not a lot of product build-up, you may opt to co-wash with the conditioner only.
• Rub products into your hands and apply to hair in a downward stroking motion. Never apply conditioner to your roots where you have bonds, tapes or beads as this can cause slippage. You may use shampoo on your scalp to cleanse the skin and remove product build-up without affecting the bonds.
• Clarifying Rinse shampoo (https://www.arielahairandbeauty.com/product-page/clarifying-rinse)is great at removing initial build-up on the hair. Be sure to follow with the Rehydrate shampoo to start adding that moisture back into the hair. It is also used on its own to wash your hair before your hair extension appointment and can be followed with Replenish from mid-shaft to ends only. This ensures a squeaky clean, oil-free base for your hair extension application and prevents slippage.
• Use Restore Conditioning Masque (https://www.arielahairandbeauty.com/product-page/nude-london-restore-conditioning-masque)bi-weekly to keep hair nourished, smooth and give it intense shine. It can be used weekly to give hair an extra conditioning boost if necessary.
• Keep your hair tangle-free with the Tress Tamer brush (https://www.arielahairandbeauty.com/product-page/nude-london-tress-tamer)that doesn't snag on the hair or tug at the attachments. Always hold the hair in sections firmly at the root and brush gently from the ends working your way upwards to ensure you aren't tugging at the roots. Please ensure you are brushing all the way up to the roots and not just on the surface of the extensions to avoid matting at the root.
• Braid or twist your hair before you sleep and ensure it is thoroughly dry to avoid tangling. Cover with a satin bonnet or sleep on a satin pillow case for extra protection and to avoid frizz or friction.
• Minimise the use of hot styling tools and avoid using blowdryers and straighteners above 180-200°C. Use Thermal Defence heat protectant (https://www.arielahairandbeauty.com/product-page/thermal-defence)prior to using any heated appliances and keep appliances away from bonds, tapes or beads at the root attachments to avoid damage. Using accessories like bendy rollers and various foam rollers are a great way to get curls without applying heat.
• If you are wearing Nude Locks or K-Tips, take time often to go row by row separating them at the root to avoid them matting/fusing together.
In the first few weeks you may lose a few odd extensions or possibly experience some shedding from any bespoke hand-made bonds (although this is extremely rare). The majority of our clients lose very few to no bonds but as a precaution we like to tell all our clients that between appointments, it is possible to lose up to 10% of their Nude/Micro Nude Locks and this could be down to a few factors including excessive brushing of the hair, more than usual natural hair shed as well as an oily scalp or conditioner getting inside the rings which can both lead to slippage.
Whilst on holiday/in warmer climates for various reasons, including discolouration of the hair when coming into contact with intense UV exposure, swimming pool chlorine, sunscreen and the hair drying out through excessive heat. We strongly advise all clients using hair extensions to avoid both submerging hair in chlorine and sea water as this can damage hair and hair colour. Use a Malibu hard water treatment, hair care containing SPF sun protection (eg. Oribe Invisible Defense Spray), tie hair up and cover with a swimming cap as a precaution.
Use mineral sunscreens that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide for example, as these are best for extensions. Sunscreens containing Avobenzone (Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane) and Octocrylene react with the keratin in hair, especially when exposed to UV rays and minerals in water like iron. This discolors hair extensions and can turn especially blonde hair orange or pink. Other chemical UV filters like Oxybenzone, Homosalate, Octinoxate, and Octisalate can also contribute to discoloration so look out for these ingredients. Some sunscreen brand recommendations include Sun Bum, Balmond's, Blue Lizard, Sun Zapper and Salt & Stone.
